The Queen's Debating Union will be hosting the Chancellor's Cup on the weekend of November 10th-12th, 2006. One of the finest invitational debating tournaments in Canada, we annually attract between 100 and 150 participants from a wide range of undergraduate disciplines to debate a variety of topics, from medical ethics to international politics. This year's tournament will feature competitions in Canadian Parliamentary style with participants facing off for six power bracketed rounds breaking to quarters.

Between rounds of debate, the Chancellor's Cup will also include three rounds of public speaking. For more information, including sponsorship opportunities, please contact Katherine Chasmar (5kc1@qlink.queensu.ca), the Chancellor's Cup Tournament Director.

The Canadian University Society for Intercollegiate Debate (CUSID) National Championship is an annual, prestigious debating competition in order to recognize excellence in oral advocacy and title the national debating champion.

The tournament spans three days, commencing with a round-robin on the first two days of competition, followed by elimination debates and the championship round on the third day.  The tournament also holds a separate championship round for novice debaters to provide an opportunity for new debaters to showcase their talent on a national scale.

The tournament takes place in parliamentary style, with the Government team proposing a motion and Her Majesty’s Loyal Opposition, having no previous knowledge of the motion, refuting it.

Topics of debate range broadly, from issues in contemporary politics, international relations and bioethics to issues in culture, law and sport

The competitors are as diverse as the topics they debate, including undergraduate and graduate students from all topics of arts and sciences as well as business, engineering and law.  They hail from 40 universities from throughout Canada, from British Columbia to Newfoundland.

The tournament was inaugurated in 1979 at Queen's University, and we are proud to have the tournament return, having last hosted the tournament in 1989.
